Meet Tierra Nesbit the owner of I AM Curvy Red Boutique

Meet Tierra, a visionary entrepreneur who’s redefining the fashion industry one stitch at a time. As the proud owner of I AM Curvy Red Boutique, Tierra isn’t just creating garments; she’s crafting confidence, self-expression, and inclusivity for individuals of all body types. With a keen eye for style and a commitment to embracing diversity, she has become a beacon of empowerment, providing fashion-forward solutions that celebrate every curve. 

Tierra’s interest in her clothing boutique started in high school. “I was always attracted to fashion; however, I couldn’t always find clothing to fit my body type,” says Tierra. Out of high school, she was accepted into the ART Institute of Dallas for fashion design but did not attend. Instead, Tierra went into the workforce where she worked multiple retail jobs and became a plus-size model. She states “One of my favorite experiences modeling was for the clothing store, Torrid. I also did bridal modeling for many years; I had a blast!”

While working in retail and modeling, Tierra started to see how underserved curvy/plus women were. “I wanted to help a population of women in which I belonged to myself,” says Nesbit. Fueled by her passion for fashion and a deep understanding of the struggles faced by curvy women, Tierra embarked on the journey of opening I AM Curvy Red Boutique; empowering curvy women to “Be Bold, Beautiful, and Confident!”

For Tierra, the road to success was far from smooth. One of the challenges she faced during her journey to entrepreneurship was finding the right prices and sizes that she needed. It’s no secret that larger clothing can cost more and a lot of times it’s not very fashionable or trended, but Tierra remained diligent in her search and was sure to network everywhere she went. She also learned the importance of cash flow management. Tierra notes “Understanding and managing my cashflow is vital.” Cash flow isn’t just about how much money you make, but also when you receive it and when expenses need to be paid. She also, states “Running out of cash can be fatal for a business, even if it’s profitable on paper.”

Neither of those challenges stopped Tierra from pursuing her dream of opening I AM Curvy Red Boutique. Her passion for connecting with people and helping them feel “Bold, Beautiful, and Confident,” along with knowing that she can help women feel good about themselves kept her motivated, and in March of 2020, I AM Curvy Red Boutique had its grand opening. 

When asked “What sets your business apart from others in the same industry,” Tierra responded with the connection with her customers. She added, “I am my brand, and I’m sure to represent that fashionably anywhere I go.” This allows her to gain customers everywhere she goes in the city and even in different countries when she travels. In addition to her connections with her customers; Tierra’s ability to promote body positivity and diversity in her marketing campaigns, and the welcoming and empowering atmosphere in her store aid in setting her boutique apart from others. Her approach not only addresses the fashion needs of curvy women but also embraces their individuality, fostering strong customer loyalty and a positive brand reputation. 

Currently, I AM Curvy Red is a “one-woman show,” so, innovation within the business lies with Tierra. With that, she is constantly thinking of new ideas, yet remaining strategic. In a bold and innovative move, I AM Curvy Red has ventured into the world of cosmetics, with plans of launching her lipstick line, of course, with a signature red.

“I AM Curvy Red’s existence makes me proud,” is what Tierra responded with when asked what her proudest moment as an entrepreneur has been. She went on to say “To know that I have created a space for a group of women who are often overlooked brings me joy!” Tierra tells us being a part of Business Plan: Snap & Boost, cohort 1, has opened many opportunities for her business. She has increased her acumen and looks forward to continual growth as she utilizes all of the provided resources.

Tierra advises aspiring entrepreneurs to implement good cash flow forecasting and budgeting practices early on. She also tells us “Businesses exist to serve customers.” She encourages future entrepreneurs to quickly learn the importance of listening to their customers, understanding their needs, and delivering value to them. Building strong customer relationships and delivering exceptional service or products can lead to loyalty and positive word-of-mouth, which are essential for long-term success.
